What We Do
Hospital Education is based within The Royal Derby Hospital on the Puffin Ward and caters for all Key Stages. The education is run by the Local Authority and managed by The Kingsmead School. The Hospital and Medical provision is managed on a day to day basis by the Teacher/s based on Puffin Ward with oversight from an Assistant Head based at our Bridge Street site.
When children are admitted to hospital, parents and carers are welcome to visit the team and meet the staff. We are open for 5 mornings a week during term time. The daily school sessions are from 9.00-11.30. Children will be provided with education for whole or part of the morning depending on their medical condition(s) or treatment(s). Children and young people work on programmes within the context of the National Curriculum.
The work is individually planned and offers the children learning that is appropriate to their age, ability and particular needs while they are in hospital. The young person’s school always remains responsible for their education and the hospital education staff liaise with a child’s own school as necessary.
